Final Checks for Book Interior and Cover Files
Compare the final interior and cover PDFs as a pair before submission, then follow the printer’s latest requirements and preview.
Open the final interior and cover PDFs together. Check they describe the same trim size, reading direction, page count, paper and binding, and revision. Inspect every interior page and the full cover spread, then compare both with the printer’s latest submission rules and preview. A passing preview is not a guarantee of approval or physical print quality.

First, check that both files describe the same book
Do not stop after reviewing each PDF in isolation. Compare them as one book. Verify matching trim size and reading direction, and that the final page count confirmed in Book Studio is reflected in the cover settings.
Do the paper and binding used for the cover calculation match what you will choose at the printer?
Both files depict different parts of one book. If they come from different editing stages, reconcile them before submission even if both files open normally.
To revisit the full cover structure, read Front, spine, and back cover
| Item | Interior PDF | Cover PDF |
|---|---|---|
| Trim size and direction | Final trim and reading direction | Same trim and direction |
| Final page count | All pages actually in the PDF | Count used to calculate the cover |
| Paper and binding | Choices to be made at the printer | Same choices used in cover calculation |
| Edges and inside | Bleed where required and gutter margins | Safe area and regions that may be trimmed |
| Final files | Latest revision opened | Cover from the same revision |
If count or trim size changed, recheck the cover with the same final settings. Compare inside margins with the printer’s guidance too.
Inspect the interior PDF from first page to last
Open the file and inspect first, last, and every intervening page. Confirm blanks are intentional and check for cut-off or soft words and artwork.
Include intentional section-break blanks in the count. After editing the last interior page, do not submit an old cover; check the file names and modification stages of the PDFs you are reviewing.
A KDP paperback interior uses single pages, not two-page spreads, and an interior with bleed must be submitted as PDF. For other printers, follow their current specifications.
KDP paperback submission guidelines
To decide which pages need bleed, read KDP interior bleed
- Check count and page order against your plan.
- Make sure essential words and art are not too close to the binding.
- If art or background runs to the edge, determine whether that page needs bleed.
- Compare suspicious pages with their source and reopen the saved interior PDF.
Open the cover PDF as a spread
Verify that back, spine, and front form one page in the intended orientation. Do trim size, count, and paper used for the cover match the final interior and printer options?
Check that key words and artwork are not in outside areas that may be cut and whether the back-cover barcode space must remain clear. Compare spine width and cover safe areas with the final printer’s conditions.
Seeing text on a screen is not sufficient. Inspect front title, spine text, and back description against actual trim and safe-area lines.
For the spine width check, see How to calculate spine width
What must change on the cover if the interior changes?
Compare the two files item by item to ensure they still represent the same book.
For example, after finishing an interior at 120 pages and adding two pages, do not submit a cover calculated for 120. Compare a cover based on the new 122-page interior against the printer’s current rules. Renaming the old file cannot fix it.
For the binding-side interior area, read Inside margins and gutter
| Last change | Recheck |
|---|---|
| Pages added or removed | Final interior count and the count used for the cover |
| Trim size or reading direction | Interior size and overall cover dimensions |
| Paper or binding | Actual printer choices and cover calculation inputs |
| Edge-to-edge art | Interior bleed and cover trim/safe areas separately |
| Final words or art | Whether you opened a cover from the same revision |

KDP upload and preview guidance
- Confirm the printer’s settings first: trim, reading direction, paper, binding, and bleed using its latest guidance.
- Choose the final interior version. In Book Studio, inspect page order and count before downloading. If you already have a completed PDF, review it directly in a PDF viewer. Do not assume Book Studio automatically edits existing finished PDFs.
- Reopen the interior from first page to last, checking order, blanks, blur, crop, and important content near the binding.
- Align cover settings with the final interior. If using Cover Studio, inspect settings passed from Book Studio and compare them with the printer’s template and calculator.
- Reopen the cover PDF. Check back–spine–front order, spine width, barcode area, and safe placement of titles and important art.
- Compare the two PDFs side by side. Trim, direction, count, paper, binding, and revision should describe the same book.
- Upload each to the printer and check its preview. For KDP, inspect Print Previewer errors and warnings. Passing preview does not guarantee later approval or physical quality.
- Store the two verified final files separately. Consider a physical proof if paper color, edges, and binding results matter.
One last check before uploading
Give the two final files recognizable names and separate them from other versions. Confirm the printer’s requested formats and submission order during upload.
If the printer offers a preview, read its warnings and cropping notices. If it shows a problem, compare the latest template and requirements, correct the file, and review again.
Lalabb helps make and inspect files, but does not guarantee physical print results or the printer’s review and publishing approval.
Pre-submission checklist
- I checked this printer’s current interior and cover submission requirements.
- I reopened the actual latest interior and cover PDFs.
- Both files use the same trim size and reading direction.
- The interior count matches the count used for the cover.
- I checked order and intentional blanks from first to last.
- Important art and text near the binding remain safely placed.
- I checked edge-to-edge bleed against the printer’s requirements.
- I reconsidered blurry or pixelated art at target print size.
- I checked back–spine–front order and cover safe areas.
- Where needed, I compared spine and barcode area with the printer’s template.
- I reviewed printer-preview errors and warnings and fixed what was needed.
- I stored the two verified PDFs apart from earlier versions.
Common mistakes
- Submitting an old cover after editing the interior; compare shared settings after changes to count or trim.
- Looking only at the first interior page; inspect missing, reordered, and blank middle and last pages.
- Assuming visible spine text is safe; check final spine width and safety space.
- Treating a DPI check of one image as a full PDF review; Lalabb’s tool assesses an individual image at target size.
- Treating a passed preview as publishing approval or a physical print guarantee; later review and print inspection differ.
Troubleshooting
Interior page count and the cover’s page count differ.
Check the total in the final interior PDF, then whether it is reflected in cover settings. If pages changed, prepare the cover with the new settings. Do not just rename an old cover PDF.
The printer preview shows text or art that may be cut.
Inspect the printer’s trim and safe-area marks, and compare its latest template before editing. Determine whether the problem is interior bleed or cover trim/spine placement.
I get a warning that the cover PDF size is wrong.
Recheck final trim and count, plus the paper and binding selected at the printer. If cover inputs differ, use the latest official cover calculator or template and make a new cover.
The interior PDF has a page-size or bleed warning.
Record which pages are flagged. Separate a whole-book trim error from bleed on particular edge-to-edge pages, correct the source, and review a new PDF. KDP bleed interiors require PDF; use another printer’s own rules when applicable.
After upload, a page is missing or an older version appears.
Check the uploaded filename, revision date, first and last pages, and total count. Replace it with the correct file and preview again. Make sure the cover is from the same revision.
An image in the PDF looks soft at print size.
Compare its source pixels with its actual physical placement. DPI / Print Checker can help with one image, not guarantee quality of the entire interior or cover PDF. Replace an inadequate source or reconsider print size, then review the new PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Why check the interior and cover PDFs together?
They depict different parts of one book. Both may open while having mismatched trim, final count, direction, or cover inputs. Compare them against the same printer settings before submission.
Do blank pages count in a PDF?
Inspect blanks that are actually present in the final interior and whether they are intentional. Compare the count accepted in the printer’s preview with cover settings.
Do I need to revisit the cover after editing one or two interior pages?
Yes. A changed count or trim may change cover dimensions, especially the spine. Compare the new interior with cover inputs including paper and binding; do not blindly reuse the old PDF.
Are the first and last interior pages enough to inspect?
No. A missing middle page, unintended blank, or soft illustration can hide between them. Scan the entire order and zoom into important pages.
Does every interior need bleed?
No. Decide from edge-to-edge art and the printer’s submission rules. Bleed and the safe placement of important elements are separate checks; see the interior bleed guide.
How is cover spine width tied to the interior?
It depends on final count and the printer’s paper and binding choices. Finalize the interior, then check the cover template or calculator; see the spine-width guide.
Does passing printer preview guarantee publication?
No. Preview helps find errors before submission; the printer’s later review and physical result are separate. KDP also reviews submitted interior and cover files.
Can I skip a physical proof if the screen looks fine?
It depends on the printer and your goals. A proof helps assess color, paper, binding, and real-size legibility. KDP offers proof copies during drafting.
Can I submit images converted from PDF to PNG instead of the PDF?
Do not use that as a default. Lalabb PDF to PNG is an aid for viewing page contents. Check true PDF dimensions and submission fitness in the original PDF and printer preview, then submit the format requested.
Can Book Studio import my finished interior PDF and automatically fix it?
Not in the verified current workflow. Book Studio builds an interior PDF from JPG or PNG page images. Review an existing PDF in a viewer and revise the source project before exporting again.
Does Cover Studio automatically finish spine text or the ISBN barcode?
Do not assume so. Its verified core workflow uses book settings and front/back images to prepare the cover PDF. Check actual spine content and barcode space separately against printer rules.
Can I finish final checking on a phone?
A phone can show filenames and pages, but fine cropping, blur, and spine placement are harder to judge on a small screen. If possible, zoom into the PDF on a larger display and use the printer preview and a physical proof where needed. This is advice, not a Lalabb mobile auto-check feature.
Can I use this checklist for a printer other than KDP?
Its core comparison of versions, trim, count, and safety is useful. File format, bleed, barcode, template, and submission order may differ. Follow that printer’s latest requirements for final decisions.
I cannot tell which of several PDFs is final.
Choose the interior and cover as a pair and reopen them. Compare first and last pages, total count, and book settings. Give versions distinctive names and store older ones elsewhere, but verify contents rather than trusting names alone.
