Cover Studio help and print notes

KDP and paperback cover creator

Cover Studio helps prepare a paperback cover spread from Book Studio settings. The book cover size calculator uses trim size, final page count, and paper type to estimate spine width and arrange the front, spine, and back with bleed, trim, and safe-area guides. Export a print-ready cover PDF draft for review; platform acceptance is not guaranteed.

Quick answers

How do I calculate a KDP book cover size?

Set trim size, final page count, and paper in Book Studio, then choose Make My Cover. Cover Studio uses those values for the spread and estimated spine. Compare the PDF with the current printer template before publishing.

How is spine width calculated?

The current estimate multiplies page count by a paper factor: 0.002252 in for white, 0.0025 in for cream, or 0.002347 in for premium color. Verify the result against the printer’s latest specification.

Do I need bleed for a paperback cover?

Bleed is used when artwork reaches the trimmed edge. This export reserves 0.125 in at the outer edges; check the current printer template for exact requirements.

Can I create the front, spine, and back cover together?

Yes. The single spread places the back and front artwork around a calculated spine area. The spine is reserved, but spine lettering is not added.

What does Cover Studio export?

It exports a one-page PDF spread using the front and back images and Book Studio dimensions. On-screen guide overlays and animations are excluded.

Does the export guarantee print acceptance?

No. It is a draft for review, not a printer certification. Check the file in the destination platform’s current previewer.

How Book Studio and Cover Studio work together

Book Studio prepares the interior and records the trim size, final page count, paper type, and reading direction. Make My Cover passes those project values and the calculated spine estimate to Cover Studio. There, separate front and back artwork is placed around the spine; bleed, trim, and safe-area guides help with visual review. The exported PDF is a one-page spread. Reading direction is carried as project information and does not reorder the panels.

How to use Cover Studio

  1. In Book Studio, set trim size, final page count, paper, and reading direction, then prepare the interior PDF.
  2. Choose Make My Cover to pass the book settings into Cover Studio.
  3. Upload a separate JPG or PNG for the front and back, then position and scale each image with the on-screen guides.
  4. Review validation notes, export the PDF, and compare the downloaded file with the printer’s current template before submission.

When this workflow is useful

  • Preparing a paperback cover after arranging its interior pages.
  • Checking how separate front and back artwork fit around an estimated spine.
  • Creating a PDF draft to review against a printer-provided cover template.

Limitations and notes

  • Spine width is an estimate based on the selected page count and paper factor; printer specifications may differ.
  • Resolution checks estimate effective DPI and warn about low-resolution art; they do not add image detail.
  • The tool does not certify KDP compliance, add spine lettering, or guarantee marketplace approval.
  • Artwork is processed in this browser. Review the exported file in the printer’s current preview tool.

Cover Studio FAQ

Can I upload separate front and back images?

Yes. Add a JPG or PNG to each panel; each image can be adjusted independently.

Can I move or resize my cover artwork?

Yes. Drag it within its panel, use the scale control, or choose Fit to cover.

Are bleed and safe-area guides included in the final PDF?

No. Guide lines are for on-screen review. The PDF has the spread dimensions and placed artwork without guide overlays.

Can I use Cover Studio without Book Studio?

The current flow expects a Book Studio handoff for trim, page count, paper, and spine settings. Start there and choose Make My Cover.

Does Cover Studio check image resolution?

It estimates effective DPI and can show a low-resolution warning. It does not upscale or restore detail.

Does the tool guarantee KDP approval?

No. Local checks are guidance, not KDP certification or approval. Use KDP Print Previewer and current requirements.

Is my cover uploaded to a server?

No. Selected artwork is processed in this browser to create the PDF; the images are not uploaded by this tool.

Can I use the tool on mobile?

The page adapts to narrow screens. A larger display may be more comfortable for precise placement and final review.
