How to Resize Images for Web and Print

Choose pixel dimensions from the real screen slot or physical print size, preserve aspect ratio, and understand why one resized file rarely serves both uses well.

For web, begin with the rendered pixel slot

A web image is primarily displayed in CSS pixels on screens. Find the widest slot in which the asset will appear and account for high-density screens if your design serves a larger source. A 3000-pixel photo displayed at 600 pixels may waste download bytes if no zoom or alternate layout uses the extra detail.

Do not reduce below the largest real use and expect the browser to recover sharpness. Text in graphics is especially sensitive. Test responsive layouts at narrow and wide widths, and keep source assets separate from the delivery files generated for the site.

For print, connect inches to pixels

Print preparation starts from physical dimensions. Multiply width and height in inches by the chosen DPI to find the mathematical pixel requirement. An 8.5 × 11 inch page requires 2550 × 3300 pixels at 300 DPI, 2040 × 2640 at 240 DPI, or 1275 × 1650 at 150 DPI.

Those numbers describe pixel density, not guaranteed appearance. Focus, motion blur, previous compression, sharpening, paper, ink, printer behavior, color conversion, and production workflow also affect the final page. Use the DPI / Print Checker as an estimate and follow the current provider specification.

  3. Multiply inches by DPI and compare with the source pixels.

Preserve shape and avoid false detail

In Lalabb, enter the target width and leave height at 0 to preserve the source aspect ratio. Supplying both dimensions forces the exact target rectangle and can stretch the image when ratios differ. Cropping or padding requires another workflow.

Upscaling is sometimes required by a delivery system, but it cannot create authentic detail. Treat an enlarged result as an interpolated copy and inspect it at expected print or screen size. Whenever possible, return to a larger original rather than enlarging a small derivative.

Plan around the current WebP-only result

Image Resizer currently exports WebP only. WebP is useful for many modern web destinations, but some print workflows or older systems request JPG, PNG, TIFF, or a placed image inside a PDF. Confirm the accepted format before investing in a batch of resized files.

If the final destination does not accept WebP, keep the resized WebP as an intermediate only when that makes sense and use a separate conversion tool. Every additional encoding step should be reviewed. The resizer does not set bleed, trim boxes, a physical page size, or a printer profile.
