How to Resize an Image Without Stretching It

Preserve the source aspect ratio by changing one dimension and letting the other be calculated, then verify the WebP result before use.

To resize without stretching in Lalabb, enter the target width and leave height at 0. The tool calculates a proportional height from the original aspect ratio. If you enter both dimensions with a different ratio, the image will be stretched or squashed. Current output is WebP only.

Understand aspect ratio before entering dimensions

Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. A 1600 × 900 image has a 16:9 ratio; dividing both dimensions by the same factor preserves that shape. Stretching occurs when width and height are changed by different proportions without cropping.

For example, changing 1600 × 900 to 800 × 450 preserves the ratio. Changing it to 800 × 800 forces a wide image into a square and distorts the content. A square destination normally requires cropping or adding space, neither of which the current Image Resizer provides.

  2. Calculate or recognize its width-to-height relationship.
  3. Decide whether the destination needs proportional resizing, cropping, or padding.

Use the proportional-height behavior

Open Image Resizer, choose a supported JPG, PNG, or WebP image, and enter the new width. Leave height at 0. The engine then calculates height from the source bitmap, so both axes change by the same scale factor.

If you already know a proportional width and height, entering both can also work. The important condition is that the target ratio matches the source. Because the tool does not warn about ratio mismatch or crop automatically, leaving height at 0 is the safer default.

Expect a WebP file, not the original format

The current approved Image Resizer always encodes the result as WebP. A JPG input does not remain JPG, and a PNG input does not remain PNG. This is a product limitation, not merely a filename choice.

Confirm that the destination accepts WebP. If it requires JPG or PNG, use a separate approved conversion step after resizing and review the new result again. Keep the original file because conversion and resampling create a derivative rather than an editable master.

Review quality after downscaling or enlarging

Downscaling can make a delivery file more appropriate for its destination, but thin lines and tiny text may change during resampling. Inspect those features at the actual display size and at 100%. Avoid judging only from a browser thumbnail.

Upscaling creates a larger pixel grid by interpolation but cannot reconstruct real detail missing from the source. A larger number of pixels is not proof of better quality. For print, compare the final pixel dimensions with the physical size and target DPI.

  2. Confirm that the width and height have the expected ratio.
  3. Inspect faces, circles, text, and fine edges.
  4. Test in the real destination before deleting any working copy.

Limitations

  • The current output format is WebP only.
