Choose WebP for a compact web-delivery copy when your destination supports it. Choose JPG for broad photographic compatibility. JPG cannot keep transparency, so transparent source areas are filled with white. Keep a master PNG or original photo when transparency or later editing matters.

Adjust quality deliberately

Quality controls the encoder trade-off rather than setting a guaranteed visual score or target file size. Lower values commonly reduce bytes but can introduce block patterns, color smearing, ringing near edges, and softened text. Complex photographs and flat screenshots respond differently.

Begin high, create one copy, and inspect it. If it remains larger than your delivery limit, lower quality in small steps. Stop when artifacts become visible at the size people will actually use. A dramatic percentage claim is not reliable because the starting format and content dominate the result.
