How to Check If an Image Is Really 300 DPI

Verify actual pixel dimensions against the intended physical print size instead of trusting a metadata label by itself.

An image is effectively 300 DPI only at a specific physical size. Divide pixel width by print width in inches and pixel height by print height; both values must meet the target. A 300 DPI metadata tag alone does not prove the file has enough pixels.

Treat DPI as a relationship, not a magic label

A raster file has a measurable pixel width and height. Effective print DPI depends on how those pixels are spread across physical inches. The same 3000-pixel-wide image is 300 DPI at 10 inches wide, 200 DPI at 15 inches, and 600 DPI at 5 inches.

Metadata can store a preferred resolution value, but editing that number does not create pixels. Some applications use the tag to suggest a default physical size; others ignore it. A dependable check uses the actual pixel count and the intended final dimensions.

Calculate horizontal and vertical DPI

Divide pixel width by intended print width in inches. Then divide pixel height by intended print height. Use the lower value as the effective constraint because one axis can fall short even when the other exceeds the target.

For a 2550 × 3300 pixel image printed at 8.5 × 11 inches, both calculations equal 300. If the same file is cropped, stretched to another proportion, or printed larger, the effective values change. Calculate after the final crop whenever possible.

When the result meets target, review the image at expected print scale and follow the current printer or marketplace specification. Final print quality also depends on the printer, source image quality, sharpening, paper and production workflow.
